Sandile Sikhosane lives and teaches Mathematics in Midlands Community College in Nottingham Road, KwaZulu Natal. He has 10 years’ teaching experience in teaching Mathematics and is passionate about the subject and the way he teaches it. He has found that a sound understanding of both the theory and application of Mathematics has led to an improvement in the learners’ ability to understand Physical Science and Life Science.

Sandile is a graduate of VuMA and has made full use of the technological skills he learnt there, in his teaching. He also sets up a Grade 12 WhatsApp mathematics support group on an annual basis. This promotes teamwork since the learners work together on problems

Sandile not only teaches during the normal school hours, but also teaches before and after school, and during the weekends. The results speak for themselves. Learners gain distinctions in their final exams and in 2017, Sandile produced a 92% pass rate from the Grade 12 learners in Mazwendoda Secondary School.

Because of his concern for learners, Sandile also gives assistance to people in neighboring schools during weekends and in holidays.

Sandile gives special tuition to a select group comprising five learners per school from the twelve surrounding Secondary Schools. The selection is based on good performance and the potential to excel in mathematics. This requires Sandile to set up the classes and to arrange sponsorship for the study and teaching material, transport and meals for the group. Sandile is also a tutor for Midlands Excellency Project, which helps learners in the surroundings of Pietermaritzburg Schools with Mathematics and Physical Sciences on Saturdays.

VuMA also runs shorter workshops for teachers during the school holidays, and Sandile is one of the facilitators for these.

Our country currently has a very high unemployment rate, but at the same time is facing a critical skills shortage in the applied sciences fields. Sandile’s goal is to develop an environment in which learners will flourish mathematically and thus be able to continue their studies at Tertiary level and qualify in the various science fields where mathematics is a necessity.
